Echizen Hosui
Echizen Hosui is most notably known for his high quality painted bonsai pots, although he is also a very talented glaze artist.
Now in his 80's, Echizen Hosui was born 'Zenzo Yoshida' in 1936, in Fukui Prefecture, just north of Lake Biwa and Kyoto.Hosui often 'copied' works of other artists, leaving unmistakable tell-tale signs. Below for example is a pot made in homage to the great Tsukinawa Yusen, the original of which can be seen in Kobayashi's 'Pot Book'.
Mostly shohin and smaller, Hosui also produced some chuhin sized pots. Hosui is not as celebrated as perhaps he should be in the West, although I expect this not to be the case for much longer, as more enthusiasts are starting to discover the pots of this wonderful artist.
