Japanese painted pots
Shohin sized trees, and smaller, often require a distinctive or eye catching container to ensure each tree will stand out in a display. It is often therefore desirable to have at least one brightly coloured pot (which you rarely find for larger trees), and one painted pot.
In Japan, the three main pot 'colours' are; sometsuke, akae, and go-sai. Sometsuke is a cobalt blue underglaze, akae is a red overglaze, and go-sai means 5 colour, and painted pots are usually one, or a combination of these.
The pots used for painting are usually white porcelain, as this is a very smooth clay, which is easier to paint on, and it provides a clean white canvass.
